Maddison Graybill
Bio: Maddison grew up in a small town in Colorado, where she first discovered her love for clay in high school. She went on to earn a BA in Ceramics from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. Following graduation, she spent the summer at Touchstone Center for Craft in Farmington, Pennsylvania, before moving to western North Carolina as an Artist in Residence at Odyssey ClayWorks in Asheville. She now continues her practice from her own studio in Black Mountain.
“My work explores the intimate relationship between the human form—specifically the buttocks—and the timeless craft of pottery. The butt, a symbol of both vulnerability and strength, serves as a natural muse for the organic shapes and tactile qualities inherent in clay. Through molding and shaping both physical forms and ceramic vessels, I investigate themes of identity, sensuality, and transformation. The curves and textures that define the human posterior become a lens through which I examine balance, symmetry, and the intersection of function and aesthetic beauty in handmade ceramics. This dialogue between body and material challenges traditional boundaries, inviting viewers to reconsider notions of form, utility, and artistic expression. I like butts.”
